Close Protection and Executive Security in Switzerland

Geneva · Lausanne · Zurich. Protection officers, security-trained chauffeurs and our own vehicles

Swiss Goldline provides close protection for private clients, families, executives and visiting delegations in Switzerland, in most cases alongside our own chauffeurs and vehicles rather than through a third party.

That combination is the practical difference. A protection detail that arrives in a car it does not control, driven by someone it has not briefed, is solving half the problem. We plan the route, the vehicle, the driver and the arrival as one piece of work.

The reality

What close protection in Switzerland is actually for

Switzerland is a low-crime country and most of our clients are not at risk of violence here. It is worth saying that plainly, because a security firm that implies otherwise is selling you something you do not need.

What our clients do need protection from is more mundane and more likely: press and photographers around a known family; an individual who has become fixated and turns up at a residence or an office; strangers who recognise a face in a hotel lobby; crowding at a public event; the exposure that comes with a predictable daily routine; and the straightforward risk of carrying valuables, which in a watch-manufacturing country is not theoretical. For clients whose profile or nationality carries a specific risk, we plan against that too, and we will tell you honestly whether we are the right firm for it.

Close protection, the industry term for what most people call a bodyguard. Is mostly planning rather than presence. The work that matters happens before you arrive: knowing the venue, the entrances, the route and the alternates, agreeing what happens if something goes wrong, and making sure the person being protected can go about their day without feeling managed. A detail that is visibly working is usually a detail that planned badly.

Geneva

Close protection and bodyguard services in Geneva

Geneva is where most of our protection work takes place. It is a small, dense city with an unusual concentration of people who are publicly known. Diplomatic missions, international organisations, private banking clients, visiting delegations and the families attached to all of them, and a corresponding routine around protective services that is well understood by hotels, venues and the authorities.

For clients in Geneva we provide residential protection and reception screening, close protection for daily movement and appointments, officers for private and corporate events, airport and FBO arrivals and departures, and protection for family members separately from the principal, which is often the actual requirement. Where you already have a security team or a family office security lead, we work to their plan rather than imposing ours.

We coordinate with venues, hotels and, where it is appropriate and lawful, with the cantonal authorities. We do not perform and will not imply that we perform any official or police function.

Secure transport

Security drivers and secure executive transport

Most journeys do not need a protection detail. Many need a driver who has been trained for something going wrong.

A security-trained chauffeur plans the route with alternates, knows which approaches to a building are exposed and which are not, keeps the vehicle positioned for departure rather than for convenience, recognises when the same car has been behind you for too long, and has been trained in defensive and evasive driving. The rest of the time they are simply a chauffeur, and the journey looks like any other.

Because we operate our own fleet, the vehicle and the driver come from the same organisation as the protection plan. There is no subcontracted car arriving with a driver nobody has briefed, no unfamiliar vehicle at the pickup, and no gap between the transport plan and the security plan, they are the same document. For clients who want a low profile, we use unremarkable vehicles rather than obvious ones; a black S-Class with a following car announces exactly what it is meant to conceal.

This is the service most of our clients actually use: no visible protection, a driver who has been trained properly, and a plan that nobody has to see.

Zurich

Executive security in Zurich and German-speaking Switzerland

In Zurich our work is predominantly corporate: executive protection for board-level travel, security-trained chauffeurs for daily movement and roadshows, event and venue coverage for client functions, and coverage for visiting delegations.

We cover Zurich, Basel, Bern, Zug and the eastern resorts, including WEF week in Davos, where accreditation, road closures and security perimeters make the transport plan and the security plan inseparable.

Our team

Who provides your protection

Our protection officers are trained professionals, drawn from professional security backgrounds, and they work to a plan rather than to instinct. We select for judgement and for the ability to be unobtrusive. An officer who draws attention has already failed at the main part of the job.

Every officer signs a confidentiality agreement. We do not publish client names, use client references in marketing, confirm or deny that we work for anyone, or discuss one assignment with another client. If you need references before engaging us, we will arrange for a client to speak to you directly where they agree to it. We will not print them on a website.

Where a client or family office already has a security lead or an established team, we work to their plan, supplying officers, vehicles and local knowledge in Switzerland rather than duplicating a structure that already works.

Engagement

How we work and what it costs

  1. 01

    Confidential conversation

You tell us the situation. We will tell you honestly whether it warrants protection, whether a security-trained chauffeur is the proportionate answer, or whether you need nothing at all. We would rather lose the work than sell you a detail you do not need.

  2. 02

    Assessment

For anything beyond a single journey, we assess the actual exposure. Residences, routines, venues, travel patterns, online footprint, the predictability of the daily schedule, and set out what we recommend and why.

  3. 03

    Plan and team

We propose a specific team and plan: how many officers, what profile, what the vehicles are, what happens on arrival and departure, and what the procedure is if something goes wrong. You approve it before anyone is deployed.

  4. 04

    Deployment and review

The same officers wherever continuity allows, because a detail that knows your routine is less intrusive than one that does not. We review the arrangement at agreed intervals and scale it down when the circumstances allow, which, in Switzerland, they often do.

Close protection and security-trained chauffeur arrangements are quoted in writing before deployment.

Frequently asked questions

How much does close protection cost in Switzerland?

Protection is quoted per assignment, because the figure depends on how many officers, over how many hours, for how long, and whether vehicles are included. The structure is consistent. Close protection is quoted per officer per day against a minimum engagement. Security-trained chauffeurs are quoted as a premium over a standard chauffeur booking. Residential and ongoing arrangements are quoted monthly, and advance work or assessment is quoted separately. Every quote is fixed in writing before anyone is deployed. It is worth knowing that a security-trained chauffeur costs considerably less than a protection detail and is the proportionate answer for most clients. We will tell you which applies to your situation before you ask us to quote for the larger one.

Do I need a bodyguard in Switzerland?

Most people do not, and we will say so. Switzerland has low rates of violent crime, and for the majority of visiting clients the proportionate answer is a security-trained chauffeur rather than a protection detail. Protection becomes appropriate when there is a specific and identifiable factor: public recognition, press attention, a fixated individual, a known dispute, a profile that attracts attention in a particular context, or the routine transport of valuables. Tell us the situation and we will give you an honest assessment, including that you do not need us.

Are private security companies regulated in Switzerland?

Yes, and regulation is cantonal rather than federal. Geneva, Vaud, Valais, Neuchâtel, Fribourg and Jura apply the Concordat sur les entreprises de sécurité, under which both the company and each individual security agent require prior authorisation from the canton, subject to conditions on nationality or EU/EFTA status, civil rights, honourability and examination. The German-speaking cantons, including Zurich, regulate separately and the requirements differ between them.

Do bodyguards carry guns in Switzerland?

Usually not. Weapons carried by private security personnel fall under separate Swiss weapons legislation and require their own authorisation, and the overwhelming majority of close protection work in Switzerland is unarmed. In practice, the protective value comes from planning, positioning and avoidance rather than from a firearm.

What is the difference between close protection and a security driver?

A close protection officer protects the person. A security-trained chauffeur protects the journey. A security driver plans routes and alternates, controls the vehicle and the arrival, is trained in defensive driving, and provides a meaningful layer of security without any visible protective presence. A protection officer accompanies the principal on foot, into venues and through public space. Many clients need only the driver, some need both, and we will tell you which applies.

Can you provide a chauffeur and a bodyguard together?

Yes, and this is the service we are built around. We operate our own fleet and our own officers, so the vehicle, the driver and the protection plan come from one organisation and one briefing, rather than from a protection firm and a subcontracted car that have never spoken to each other.

How discreet is the service?

Discreet enough that in most engagements nobody present knows protection is there. For the majority of our clients that means plain clothes, unremarkable vehicles, an officer who travels as part of the group, and no visible apparatus. Visible protection is sometimes the point, at a public event, deterrence is the function, but that is a deliberate choice, not a default.

Can you protect my family as well as me?

Yes, and family coverage is frequently the actual requirement. We provide protection for spouses and children separately from the principal, including school runs, activities and holidays, with officers chosen for being unobtrusive around children.

Do you work with our existing security team?

Yes. Where a client or family office already has a security lead or an established team, we work to their plan. Supplying officers, vehicles and local knowledge in Switzerland rather than duplicating a structure that already works.

Can you provide protection outside Switzerland?

Switzerland is where we operate directly. For travel elsewhere we coordinate with vetted partner firms in the destination and provide continuity through the journey, and we are straightforward about where we are providing the team ourselves and where we are coordinating someone else's.

What happens to information we share with you?

It stays with the people who need it to do the work. Every officer signs a confidentiality agreement, assessment documents are shared only with the team deployed, we do not confirm or deny who our clients are, and we retain operational records only as long as needed for the assignment. We handle personal data under the revised Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection.

Discuss your requirements

Tell us the situation in confidence and we will tell you what we think is proportionate, which is sometimes less than you expected and occasionally nothing at all. No assessment is shared with anyone outside the team that would handle it.
